TechCrunch published a great article on the death of Blockbuster Inc, as the leftovers are scooped up by Dish Network.. Must Read:  Snoozing And Losing: A Blockbuster Failure

Blockbuster-closing1104041331431

(Blockbuster? Remember that store that you drove to, just to pick a VHS or DVD video)

Hitting the nail on the coffin - "Snoozing And Losing" - The failure to embrace new technology and adapt to changes in the market is the leading cause of death for any business.

The slow death of this giant provider of in-home movies lasted well over 6 years. All the while, Blockbuster CEO was declaring: "there was no real threat from......".

The story even digs up a quote, he once made: "I've been frankly confused by this fascination that everybody has with Netflix  ..Netflix doesn't really have or do anything that we can't or don't already do ourselves."

Apparently everyone 'got' Netflix, but him..

Well, let's change just one word: "I've been frankly confused by this fascination that everybody has with Netflix Pandora   ..Netflix Pandora doesn't really have or do anything that we can't or don't already do ourselves."

Little to close to home?

Remember, Blockbuster was "a mega-chain of blue and gold awnings that decorated much of the country. They had inventory that simply could not be matched."

No company is too big to fail - Like any business, Radio must embrace new technology and adapt to changes.. Both On Air & Online!

Still think there is no value to digital assets? Does the Internet, Mobile & Streaming nonetheless offer no benefit? Internet Radio provides nothing, you can't do yourselves? "Snoozing And Losing"

Mon, 12 Apr 2010 12:01:00 -0700 Top 5 Social Media Tips for Building a Brand Online http://georgebundy.com/top-5-social-media-tips-for-building-a-brand http://georgebundy.com/top-5-social-media-tips-for-building-a-brand

Part of the Panel at RAIN Summit West "BUILDING BRANDS ONLINE" @ 2010 NAB Show in Las Vegas

5)  YouTwitFace(d)MyBuzz

Your brand should have a presence across Social Media sites. In addition to extending your reach, one of the side benefits of strengthening your brand on Social Sites is Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

      A) YouTube Channel
      B) Twitter
      C) Facebook “Fan Page”
      D) MySpace Page
      E) Google Buzz*

*Although Buzz has its critics, “there isn't much in Buzz that is new or original” don’t write off Google. Get your Buzz foot in the door, now.

Search your brand on Google (SEO): Of the 10 listing on the First search results page. The TOP 5 should be your:

     1) Web Site URL
     2) Twitter Account
     3) Facebook Fan Page
     4) YouTube Channel

     5) MySpace Page

4) BuzzThis  DIGGThat &  RETweet ToBoot

Help Spread the Love of your Brand. No matter if your station is News, Sports, Music, Talk or “Other”. Nearly every one of your web pages should include “Buttons” to share your content across ALL Social Networks. Including:

 1) Facebook Share
 2) Twitter ReTweet
 3) Google BuzzThis

EXAMPLE: KFWB’s Lisa Osborne had an article published last week on AOL.com related to Your Career and her “Cards of Density”, which has become the most popular stories on the Jobs section of AOL.
In part, because it has been shared over 3,000 times on Facebook via the Facebook Share Button on the bottom of the Article.

3)  I TWEET / YOU RE-TWEET

Retweeting is one of the most valuable currencies in the Twitter economy. Were talking Old Fashion “Word of Mouth” Provide Great Content within your Tweets and watch your brand “Catch on Fire!”

It’s OK to ask! On some of your Really Great Tweets add Pls RT - Meaning “Please ReTweet.” NOTE: Don’t do this on every Tweet.

“Don’t jam your Twitter” Leave room in your tweets to make it easier for someone to RT and also add a short reaction, endorsement or some comments. You have 140 Characters you don’t have to use them all.

bub.blicio.us coined it well: 120 is the New 140!

2) HashTag A Go Go!

One of the most complex features of Twitter for new users to understand is the hashtag, a topic with a (hash) pound symbol (#)

A hashtag is a way to unite global Tweets around some particular topic.

Claim your Own HashTag and Engage your Community with Live Chat and Conversation.

EXAMPLE: The NAB Show HashTag for this Show in Las Vegas is NABSHOW. Last week, a number of us had a Pre-Show Twitter Chat using the NAB Chat HashTag #NABChat

1)  Meet My FRIEND - SHORTY EARL (URL)

On Twitter, Facebook and Google Buzz, In Order to Squeeze as much as your can, links are “shorted”. These Short URLs, you see are BIT.ly, TinyURL.com (not really ‘tiny” anymore), IS.gd and others - BIT.ly is the default direct on Twitter.

 - In Building your Brand on Social Media Shorty Points:

a) Use your Own Website Domain within Tweets, if you can. Linking to just your web site. Don’t Shorten it.

b) Get your OWN Branded Short URL. A number of services are now offering Custom URL Shortener. Bit.ly and Awe.sm are beginning to offer powerful Custom URL Shortener. Just bring your Own Short Domain (Hack).

EXAMPLE: Some of the companies:

The New York Times @ (nyti.ms)
Pepsi @ (pep.si)
Warner Brother Records @ (wbr.fm)

A Custom URL Shortener is a great way to extend your Brand across Social Media.

Domain Hack

The most important decision is choosing and purchasing a good short domain to match your branding. We strongly suggest the domain name be kept to 5-6 characters. Few people will ever type these domains - instead they will be created via the API, shared, and clicked. Hence, the branding of your short domain should focus on being visibly recognizable. - From Bit.ly

In Conclusion:

An impressive 60% of Facebook fans and 79% of Twitter followers are more likely to recommend brands they follow on Social Networks! - From Chadwick Martin Bailey Research

So Go - YouTwitFace(d)MyBuzz – Away!

Happy Birthday, FM! It was on March 4, 1941 that the first FM station signed
on in Nashville. Station "W47NV" is now known as WSM-FM.

FM or frequency modulation -- was first proposed in a scientific paper
written by Edwin Armstrong in 1922. Edwin Armstrong presented his paper: "A
Method of Reducing Disturbances in Radio Signaling by a System of Frequency
Modulation", which first described FM radio, before the New York section of
the Institute of Radio Engineers on November 6, 1935:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FM

In 1938, Edwin Armstrong built 425 foot Alpine Tower, in Alpine, New Jersey,
for his transmission experiments that led to modern FM radio. The original
transmissions occurred at 42.8MHz: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpine_Tower

Today Alpine Tower in the home of WFDU 89.1 Teaneck NJ, the broadcast outlet
of Fairleigh Dickinson University: www.wfdu.fm

According to Inside Radio: Today, there are nearly 11,000 radio stations
around the nation -- close to six-out-of-ten of them operating on the FM
band.
